History

The first people to inhabit the island of Sri Lanka are the Veddahs and the presence of  Sri Lankan Tamils (இலங்கை தமிழர்,
ஈழத் தமிழர்
in the island dates backs to 2nd century BCE. There were two different kingdoms operated on the island where the northern part is ruled by the Tamil kings and the southern part is ruled by the Sinhala kings and the actual administration area of the kings varied on different period. Both the Tamil kingdom and Sinhala kingdoms had minted their own coins and had different rules. The island was finally unified by the British into one administration in 1833.

British Period

The minority Tamils enjoyed the higher position jobs than the majority Sinhalese population and this had sometimes triggered clashes between the Tamils and Sinhalese. The British had also imported Indian Tamil workers to work on the coffee and sugarcane industries. This increased the Tamil population over 30% in Ceylon but the British also moved the workers from Ceylon to their other territories. Some Indian Tamils had also retured to India after the August 15, 1947. Finally the Ceylon got independence in 1948.

After  Independence

The situation sored more after the independence in 1948. The Sinhalese want Sinhala as only the national language of Sri Lanka and Tamils faced discrimination is every field. Some student groups started to protest against the government. Some students organisation later gained most peoples trust and becomes powerful militants groups and fought against the government.

Civil War

The LTTE were run the northeastern region of the Sri Lanka as a de facto state until the government troops capture it on the 2009 and again control over the entire island.

Sports

Tamil Eelam has its own football team and it participates in the VIVA football tournament which is conducted once for every two year. The players of the team are the native people of Eelam who had immigrated to the western countries.
